Clarkson Family Dentistry – Gentle Dental Extractions When You Need Them

Sometimes Teeth Just Have to Go – We Make It Easy

At Clarkson Family Dentistry, we get it—nobody wants to hear they need a tooth pulled. But sometimes, it’s the best option for your health, and when it is, we’re here to make the experience as easy and comfortable as possible. Whether you’re dealing with a painful wisdom tooth or a severely damaged tooth that can’t be saved, we’ve got you covered.

Why Would You Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are a few reasons why a tooth might need to come out:

  • Severe Decay or Damage

Sometimes a tooth is too far gone due to decay or injury, and pulling it is the best way to avoid future problems.

  • Overcrowding

If your teeth are too close together, removing one or more teeth can help make room for proper alignment.

  • Infected or Abscessed Tooth

An infection that reaches the root of a tooth can often lead to an extraction if it can’t be resolved with a root canal.

  • Problematic Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth often come in at awkward angles or don’t fit properly, leading to pain, crowding, or other issues.

If your tooth is causing pain or affecting your oral health, an extraction might be the solution to get you back on track.

The Tooth Extraction Process

We know the idea of getting a tooth pulled isn’t anyone’s favorite thing. But the process is actually much simpler and quicker than most people think. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Consultation

We’ll chat with you about what’s going on with your tooth, take X-rays if needed, and make sure an extraction is the best option.

2. Numbing the Area

Don’t worry—you won’t feel anything during the extraction! We use local anesthesia to completely numb the area around the tooth.

3. The Extraction

Using gentle techniques, we carefully remove the tooth. This part is over faster than you’d expect!

4. Aftercare Instructions

We’ll give you all the info you need to take care of the area at home, including tips for pain relief and healing.

We’ll be with you every step of the way, and if you have any questions, we’re just a phone call away.

What Happens After a Tooth Extraction?

Post-extraction care is just as important as the extraction itself. Healing is usually smooth and straightforward, but we’ll make sure you know what to do:

  • Rest

Take it easy for a day or two. Your body needs time to heal.

  • Ice and Elevation

If there’s any swelling, use an ice pack and keep your head elevated when lying down.

  • Soft Foods

Stick to soups, smoothies, and soft foods for the first few days—your mouth will thank you!

  • Avoid Straws and Smoking

Using a straw or smoking can disturb the blood clot and delay healing. Avoid them for a few days.

  • Keep the Area Clean

Rinse with warm salt water after the first day to keep the area clean, but avoid brushing directly on the extraction site for a couple of days.

Most people heal up in about a week, but we’ll follow up with you to make sure everything is going smoothly.

FAQs About Tooth Extractions

Does it hurt to get a tooth pulled?

Nope! We make sure the area is completely numb before starting, so you won’t feel a thing. You might feel some pressure, but no pain. If you’re nervous, we also offer options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax.

How long does it take to heal?

Most patients feel much better within 1-2 days and are fully healed in about a week. We’ll give you all the info you need to make recovery easy.

What if I need the tooth replaced?

Don’t worry! After your extraction heals, we can talk about options like dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures to replace the missing tooth if needed.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Life happens! Just give us a call at least 24 hours in advance, and we’ll be happy to reschedule your appointment.
